Corporate Gigs

Everyone who thinks of magic tends to think of the traditional magician pulling rabbits from top hats, or a continuous stream of ribbons from their mouth, or any number of things usually found at a kids birthday party.  However, there's a lot more opportunities to perform beyond those.  I recently did a three day event working for an insurance broker at a booth in a home show.  All the other booths had shiny displays, cute kids to show they were a family business, toys as souvenirs for passers by, one booth even had a very friendly dog to attract people.

The insurance booth had... well... me!  Had I simply been an attendee of the home show, I might have passed right by this booth.  Nothing exciting jumped out.  There were business cards and flyers as you'd expect, and a bowl of candy (much like other booths).  But, the thing that made the difference was having an engaging magician standing in front to stop people with a short trick.

For three days, I did the same three tricks, in the same order, while reciting a selected short sales pitch.  I started with an appended sponge balls routine in the walkway to stop them.  Next, a psychic trick (one ahead for those who know) and used it as an excuse to walk them toward the table. Then gave them the pitch, turned them over to the insurance guy, and promised them a grand finale when he was done.

This all worked perfectly like a machine.  The Insurance broker was surprised at the success of simply having an unorthodox method of marketing to get people to his booth.  Needless to say, he'll be calling again.

This only goes to show that there is plenty of work out there.  Go find it.
