The Actual Work

As spectators pass by and watch what magicians do, the sentiment is usually the same: "What a cool life" (or something to that effect).  The reality is that the performance is the culmination of a lot of effort.  There's marketing, cold calling, planning at home, costume design and purchase, restocking on used and damaged props, new material, travel, lectures, crafting, repairs, networking... the list goes on (that doesn't even talk about all the costs).

This, like any job/career is not easy.  It's not for the weak.  It takes every ounce of your dedication and drive to continue and do all of those things every single day.  If you annoy people talking about it, good. That means it's in your blood and you can't stop.  People passing by and tipping a dollar or two are placing a value on their experience. So, the goal is to give them a higher value experience.  Make them want to remember you.  Make it so that even if they don't watch your performance, they still remember your name.  Give them such an experience that the ones and fives turn into tens and twenties.
